Insta-Stalking

Quietly scrolling deep into someone’s Instagram to learn about a crush, date, or ex.

Insta-stalking is the habit of digging through someone’s Instagram to gather information about them. You scroll their posts, tagged photos, and old archives without ever liking or interacting with anything.

It commonly happens before a first date or after a breakup. People use it to vet a match, check who an ex is seeing now, or simply feed curiosity about a crush they have not worked up the nerve to talk to.

A little research is normal and even sensible for safety, but it can tip into rumination. Hours of scrolling through old photos rarely makes you feel better and often fuels comparison, jealousy, or stories you invent about their life.

This overlaps with imaginationships, since both can build a false picture from limited clues. Set a clear limit for yourself. A quick look to confirm someone is real is reasonable, but obsessive scrolling usually tells you more about your own anxiety than about them.
