Bad Pancake

Bad Pancake is the first person you date after a breakup, treated as a low-stakes practice run rather than a serious match.

Bad Pancake takes its name from cooking, where the first pancake rarely comes out right and gets tossed. In dating, it describes the first person you go out with after a breakup or a long single stretch.

The idea is that this date is a warm up. You are shaking off rust, remembering how to flirt, and figuring out what you want, so you do not expect it to lead anywhere.

Treating someone as a bad pancake can be freeing because it lowers the pressure. It can also be unfair if the other person is looking for something real and does not know they are your practice round.

The healthiest version is honest. Go in with low expectations for the match, but still treat the person with basic respect rather than as something disposable.
