Breadcrumbing

Breadcrumbing is leading someone on with occasional flirty messages or attention without any intention of committing to a real relationship.

Breadcrumbing is when a person sends just enough attention to keep you interested, but never follows through on plans or commitment. The name comes from leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that leads nowhere.

The breadcrumbs are usually small and inconsistent. A flirty text, a like on an old photo, or a vague suggestion to hang out that never turns into an actual date.

The pattern keeps the other person hopeful and emotionally invested while the breadcrumber enjoys the attention without giving anything real back. It often appears alongside behaviors like benching and orbiting.

Psychologists describe breadcrumbing as a form of intermittent reinforcement, the same unpredictable reward pattern that makes slot machines compelling. The randomness can make the attention feel more exciting than steady affection would.

If someone only shows up when it is convenient for them and avoids real plans, you are likely being breadcrumbed. Consistent effort, not occasional crumbs, is the sign of genuine interest.
