Freckling

Freckling is a summer-only fling, a warm weather romance that appears with the sun and fades when the season ends.

Freckling is the summer counterpart to cuffing season. Like freckles that show up in the sun and fade in fall, a freckling partner arrives for the warm months and disappears afterward.

The romance is built around summer energy. Festivals, vacations, long evenings, and a general sense that the season is for fun rather than settling down.

Where cuffing is about staying warm through winter, freckling is the opposite impulse, a light and temporary fling with a built in expiration date.

It can be a good time when both people understand the terms. It hurts when one person hopes the summer romance will carry into the rest of the year.

If you sense a connection is a freckling situation, naming it early saves the autumn disappointment when the other person drifts away.
