Phubbing

Phubbing is snubbing the person you are with by paying attention to your phone instead of them.

Phubbing blends “phone” and “snubbing.” It describes the habit of glancing at, scrolling, or replying on your phone while someone is trying to talk to you face to face.

On a date it shows up as checking notifications mid-conversation, half-listening while you skim a screen, or reaching for your phone the moment there is a lull. The other person notices, even when you think you are being subtle about it.

Repeated phubbing signals that the device matters more than the moment, which slowly erodes the sense of being valued. It often pairs with feeling distracted, dismissed, or disconnected, and over time those small slights add up to real resentment.

A simple habit helps: put the phone face down or away during dates and meals. Giving someone your full attention is one of the cheapest, clearest ways to show that you actually care about them.
