Hall Pass

Hall Pass is permission from your partner to have a one-time fling with someone else without it counting as cheating.

For most couples, a hall pass is a joke about a celebrity crush. You name the famous person you would be allowed to hook up with in an impossible fantasy, laugh about it, and never expect the scenario to happen.

Some couples use the phrase for a real agreement. That makes it much more serious because it changes the sexual rules of the relationship, even if the exception is meant to happen once.

The Celebrity Game Version

The light version can be harmless when both people understand it as fantasy. It can even reveal attraction patterns without putting pressure on the relationship.

Trouble starts when one partner uses the joke to test permission for something real. If the name is a coworker, friend, ex, or someone reachable, the conversation has moved out of fantasy and into boundaries.

A hall pass can also expose insecurity that was already there. If the joke leaves one person feeling compared, replace the bit with a real check-in about reassurance and desire.

Rules Before A Real Pass

A real hall pass needs clear consent before anything happens. Silence, nervous laughter, pressure, or a drunk conversation do not create an agreement.

  • Who is included, a named person or any person?
  • What acts are allowed?
  • Is emotional contact afterward allowed?
  • Will you tell each other details?
  • What safer-sex rules apply?
  • Can either partner cancel the agreement before it happens?

Also decide what happens after the pass is used. Some couples want the exception to end immediately with no ongoing texting, private jokes, repeat meetups, or social media contact with the other person.

This is where a hall pass overlaps with an open relationship, but it is narrower. Polyamory involves openness to multiple romantic bonds, while a hall pass is framed as a bounded exception.

It also differs from swinging, where couples may share sexual experiences under agreed rules. If you are considering a real exception, our guide to how open marriage works may help you think through rules before anyone acts.

If someone takes a hall pass that was never clearly granted, that is not a hall pass. It may be micro-cheating at the low end, or plain cheating if sexual contact crossed your relationship agreement.

Repair after a broken agreement depends on honesty, remorse, and changed behavior. For couples facing that fallout, our article on rebuilding trust after infidelity covers the harder work that follows betrayal.
