Nonversation

A Nonversation is an empty, going-nowhere exchange, the kind of dull small talk common in dating app chats.

A nonversation is a conversation that technically happens but says nothing. Hey, how are you, good you, the kind of flat exchange that never gets anywhere.

Dating apps are full of them. Matches trade a few low effort messages out of politeness or habit, with no real curiosity on either side.

The problem is momentum. Without a genuine question or a spark of personality, the chat stalls and usually fades into silence.

Nonversations often happen when one or both people are half-apping it, swiping and messaging without much intent.

The fix is effort and specificity. Asking something real, referencing their profile, or sharing an actual opinion turns a nonversation into a conversation worth continuing.
