Pen Pal

A pen pal is someone you exchange ongoing messages with, often without the relationship moving toward meeting in person.

A pen pal is a person you write to regularly, traditionally by letter and now usually by text or dating app. In a dating context, the term describes a match who keeps chatting indefinitely but never plans an actual date.

You might trade good-morning texts and long messages for weeks while every suggestion to meet gets dodged, postponed, or quietly ignored. The connection feels active yet goes nowhere real.

Some people genuinely enjoy a low-pressure correspondence, while others use endless messaging to avoid commitment or to keep a backup contact warm. The two motives can look identical from the outside, which makes them easy to confuse.

If you want a relationship and a match stays purely text-based, suggest a clear plan to meet within a reasonable window. How they respond tells you whether you have a partner-in-progress or just a pen pal.
